Property Location

The picturesque town of Saint Savinien is located on the banks of the Charente river. The town is overlooked by the church which is situated on a hill - a landmark in this otherwise quite flat landscape. This is a place where it feels as if time has stood still, yet where all the comforts and essentials of modern living is available at one\'s doorstep. Saint Savinien has got all the facilities needed to provide an uncomplicated stay. Apart from the supermarket on the edge of the town, there are a few restaurants, banks, bakers, a butcher, a fine wine shop, a cinema, an art gallery, estate agents and more. The island provides entertainment in the summer with it\'s miniature boats and also a swimming pool and cycle paths. It is the ideal spot to take down a picnic lunch on a summer\'s day. There are a few airports that is within easy driving from Saint Savinien. The closest is La Rochelle which is forty minutes drive away. The ferryport of St Malo is four and a half hours from St Savinien.

Description of Property

The little terraced house behind the church was to be our place in the sun in France. Bought in a barely habitable state, it was the only house in this gorgeous town that our budget could stretch to! Four years on we have upgraded the house to the extent that we now feel confident that others can share in experiencing the qualities of Saint Savinien that makes it such a sought after holiday destination in the Charente Maritime. The house has a simple facade that belies the size of the property. On entering the front door there is a comfortable lounge furnished in a contemporary style, yet retaining elements of Africa reflecting the cultural heritage of the owner’s country of birth. Her own ceramics and artwork can be found throughout the house and adds to the very particular feel of the interior. To the side of the lounge a door opens into a lobby which leads into a downstairs cloakroom with a toilet and hand-washbasin. There is also a space for hanging coats and jackets. The dining area is part of the open plan living room. It accommodates six people around the dining table. A CD player with a variety of CD\'s can provide background music for dining. The dining room leads into the kitchen. The kitchen is one area of the house that has not yet been refitted. In spite of the rather unsophisticated appearance, it nevertheless has all the necessary equipment for day tot day living. For cooking there is an electric cooker, oven and microwave. A washing machine, dryer and fridge/freezer is provided – unfortunately no dishwasher yet! The table in the kitchen also serves as a food preparation area as well as a pleasant place to enjoy a breakfast. From the kitchen the staircase leads up to a large landing with a roof window. The spacious bedroom on the first floor has only recently been completed. The second bedroom upstairs is the only room in the house that still features the wallpaper that we bought it with! The room is cosy with a sloping ceiling and a low-set window facing out on the courtyard. The bathroom has been recently installed in what used to be a dark little bedroom. Now a roof window makes this a bright and attractive area. It also benefits from a shower which assures that all tastes are catered for. The landing is where we spend rainy evenings with a book or in front of the TV - we do however prefer long walks or relaxing in the courtyard if the weather is fine! The TV receives BBC1 and ITV. There is also a DVD player and we are gradually adding to the collection. There are plenty of books to read, as well as maps and leaflets to assist in exploring this wonderful area The little courtyard behind the house is reached from the kitchen. Here one can linger during the long summer evenings with a glass of wine, or spend time reading in the shade of the lilac tree on a lazy afternoon.

Places of Interest

The department of the Charente Maritme is a popular destination for both French and international holiday makers alike. The lovely historical city of La Rochelle is a paradise for shoppers, lovers of fine foods and boat enthusiasts. The colonnaded walkways are a feature of the city, and with a world famous aquarium and some excellent museums this city is a must for visitors to the Charente Maritime. The city of Saintes is situated on the Charente river. Originally a Roman settlement, the remains of this ancient civilisation is still evident across the whole of this beautiful French city. Most obvious is the Arch of Germanicus in the city centre, but the remains of the amphitheatre is an amazing sight and worth making an effort to see. Three spectacular historical churches reach upwards with their spires and can be seen for miles from the surrounding countryside. The open air market in the centre of the city on Saturday mornings is a delight for the senses with every kind of fresh seasonal produce, local wines, cheeses and more. Rochefort with its maritime history, Royan with its boats and beaches, the popular islands of the Île de Ré and the Île d\'Oléron and the small villages with their central Romanesque churches: so many impressions that make up the whole of a tranquil and very special part of France
